Meet your teacher day

Today was 'Meet your teacher day' at preschool.  Alex was very excited to see his classroom and meet his teachers this morning.  He wouldn't actually talk to them, but he did nod his head when they asked him questions. It took him several months before he would talk to his teacher last year, but hopefully this year will not take him as long.  They have an outdoor playground right at the school which is beautiful!

Alex will have a class pet, a lizard named Speedy.  Speedy was having a snack of crickets when we arrived.  Alex saw Speedy eat a cricket and thought it was the coolest thing ever!  The first day of preschool is next Tuesday - I hope we are ready!

Open windows

As I mentioned in my last post, we don't have working AC at this time.  We also have very few downstairs windows that open. That makes for a pretty stuffy house! Andy wanted to work on our car today(it is leaking oil profusely), but after looking it over he determined the parts that he needed to get off were not going to come off easily. He sprayed the car parts with whatever it is he sprays on there (its really stinky is all I know), and we decided to work on the windows.

The windows were painted shut, and I'm assuming they have been that way for quite some time.  However, they came open fairly easy. Andy was not amused with my picture taking...

We even got our balcony doors open! They did not want to shut and Andy spent well over an hour getting them closed.  We probably won't be opening them often, but at least they sort of work.  They kids were thrilled with the balcony and sat and watched us, waiting not so patiently to get a turn to go on the balcony.

It rained off and on all day, but just a light rain.  We opened all the windows and the house felt wonderful!

Splash Park

It was another hot summer day!  We still don't have working AC, and even though I don't really like AC, sometimes (like when it is 100+ degrees for 3 days straight)you just need it.  Its been two months now with no AC in one of the hottest summers ever.  I never imagined that it could take this long, but when you're working with a warranty company and a very busy AC company, things get pushed aside. As of Monday the outside condenser has been replaced, we are just waiting on the inside air handler. Soon.... maybe.

We took the kids to the Splash Pad to cool off this afternoon. The water was cool and the kids had a good time.

2nd Graders!

Can you believe we have 2nd graders?

They had a great first day of school!  They talked my ear off the whole walk home.  We love that we can walk to school (we'll see if we still feel the same way in a couple months when the weather changes)!

In our backyard

Having a nice backyard was the one thing I was not willing to compromise on when it came to looking for a new house.  We truly spend a lot of time outdoors, so it was almost as important to us as having more than one bathroom!  We eat nearly every meal outdoors when we can, and the kids play outside whenever I let them. Andy and I liked another house we looked at, but it had a similar yard to our first house, broken up into little bits here and there. It was also on a corner. I hated living on a corner and hated our yard even more, because I never knew where the kids were, with gates here and there, and wherever the kids were they wanted to be in a different spot.

We absolutely love our yard here.  It was a huge selling point for us, although we've discovered the yard work is tremendous.  I don't know how we'll keep up with it come springtime.  I think I might just have to get a job to pay someone to come take care of this yard.  Its a definite possibility!

We've found all sorts of things in this very large yard of ours! Frogs, baby bunnies, lots of locusts (which Velvet has discovered she loves to eat. Yuck!), a mossy area behind our shed which is a favorite place for the kids to play...

We've added the fire pit/marshmallow roaster.  I think that(marshmallow roasting) could be its main purpose, so we should probably just call it that.  It is supposedly a very simple design, some retaining wall blocks around a 28" fire ring, but wow did it take some time and effort. It could've been that we didn't have a clue what we were doing, but we eventually figured it out.  It only took us about 3 days, a bunch of car trips, and lots of loading/unloading of 28lb blocks, when it should have been an easy 75 minute project. Ha!

Metra Adventure

We finally took the kids on their first Metra ride today! What an adventure! I've been wanting to take them on the train for the past month, and they've asked me a billion times, but it just hasn't happened. We live less than 2 blocks from the station, and Andy rides daily, so you would think it would be easy.  Kids ride free on the weekend, I can ride all weekend for $7, and Andy has his monthly pass, so it is only $7 for us to ride anywhere we want all weekend long!

We didn't have plans for what we would do or even where we would get off the train.  The train had some issues and we were stopped for about 20 minutes, but soon we were back on our way.  Since Lollapalooza was this weekend in Grant Park, we decided that we should avoid the downtown area with the kids and get off the Metra in Hyde park and walk by the Museum of Science and Industry to the beach. We thought about going to the museum, but the kids wanted to see the beach!

There were some pretty big waves in Lake Michigan, and despite both me and Andy telling the kids not to get their clothes wet because we didn't have spare clothes, they all got their clothes wet. Oh well, what can you expect?

We had a snack at Promontory Point, before heading back home.

I think we wore Alex out. He fell asleep on the train! He didn't get much of a nap though.  By the time we got off the train the sky was dark, lightning was lighting up the sky and it was starting to sprinkle.  We took off running for home, but only made it half a block before it started pouring.  Alex woke up from the rain and ran home with us, but we were all soaked.  The kids loved it and declared it the best day ever!
