Double Digits

My twins are 10!! Happy Birthday!!

We took the kids to Minneapolis/St. Paul this past weekend to show them where they were born and where we lived the first couple years of their life.  It was our first trip back there since we moved 8 years ago! It was a beautiful weekend, 80 degrees and sunny on Saturday and Sunday! Of course we woke up Monday morning and it was 50 degrees, rainy, and windy - the type of weather you might expect in October in Minnesota.

We walked around the apartment complex where we first lived and where Drew lived the first 4 days he was home from the hospital.  We moved to the duplex the day Faye came home from the hospital - it was a crazy time and I was so sleep deprived my memories are a little fuzzy.  We jumped out of the van and snapped a picture in front of the house - the kids were a little worried someone would come out and wonder what we were doing, but no one chased us away.

We also went to the Mall of America. The boys were so worried we were going shopping, and were a little discouraged, until we got there and they saw the place. We only went into 3 stores the whole time we were there - but we did have lunch and smoothies and ride some roller coasters. Faye rode her very first upside down roller coaster! I still can't believe she wanted to try it!

We did lots of other sight seeing, but I think the favorite part of the trip for the kids was the hotel. They loved the free breakfast, where they ate plate after plate of potatoes, fruit, pastries, french toast, and had hot cocoa. They loved the free drink/snacks in the evening(Andy and I did too!). They especially LOVED the pool and hot tub. I think they could have stayed at the hotel all 4 days, never left, and been extremely happy.

First day of 4th grade and 1st grade

Check out Alex looking at his brother!

Yeah! The kids are back to school! One of my kids was up at 6:30am, dressed and ready for school this morning. Can you guess which one? School does start earlier this year, but not quite that early.

We've had a very short(the kids used ALL the snow days the last school year so the school year seemed to drag on), very cool summer, with only 3 days above 90 degrees this year. Of course the 1st day of school had to be sweltering hot! Alex's classroom has AC, so it wasn't a bother to him, and the other two are used to warm weather as I rarely(only 2 days so far this year) turn on our AC. They all had a pretty good 1st day of school and they like their teachers!

August

Its hard to believe that it is August already. The summer really flew by for us...it seems like the kids just got out of school, and now we are already getting things ready for the new school year. We've purchased new backpacks, packed up the school supplies, and we're trying to get the kids to bed a little earlier each night. This year school starts about 20 minutes early than last year...I know we're going to struggle. My kids are not morning people...they take after their mom in that way. They can stay up till midnight no problem, but getting dressed, eating breakfast, and being ready for school by 8am, now that's impossible!

Alex turned 6 in July! He had a spider-man cake with sparkler candles. They wouldn't blow out..so Drew and Faye helped.

Of course on his actual birthday, we did not have power so he had a store bought cake for the 1st time ever and we celebrated in the dark!

Its hard to believe my littlest one is now a Kindergarten Graduate!! They had a really cute graduation program this morning, marching into the classroom, singing us some songs they learned, and getting their diplomas. Now off to 1st grade!

Baby Robin & Mandalas

A robin made her nest in our pine tree right outside our kitchen window, with 4 beautiful robin eggs. We kept checking the nest and one day noticed the baby robins had hatched. Unfortunately only one baby robin survived as the rest fell out of the nest. The momma robin (named Jenna by our kids) took great care of the baby(named Peep), bringing it worm after worm, and I just noticed today that the baby has left its nest after less than two weeks. They grow so quickly!

Here is a mandala I crocheted for Yarndale, a yarn festival in North Yorkshire. Last year Lucy from Attic 24 coordinated a massive crocheted bunting for Yarndale. This year she has asked for crocheters to send in a mandala for a display at Yarndale.  The colors in my photo don't really show the true colors, but since my mandala is already on the way to North Yorkshire, I can't take a new photo. Mandalas are a very quick project and a great way to use up leftover pieces of yarn...I'm making more for no reason at all!

Spring Sports

Yesterday was opening day for spring soccer and baseball.  It was a very early start for us - the baseball parade began at 8:30am, and we had to have all 3 kids ready for the entire day by 8am.  I am not a morning person and neither are my kids.  Alex was very excited to have his very first soccer game. He even volunteered to be the goalie! He did great and only allowed one goal and his team won!

Before game practice

Drew on the other hand was extremely nervous about playing baseball for the 1st time. He seems to have fun at practice, and he has been practicing outside with Andy whenever they get a chance. He was worried he would strike out or not catch the ball, or know where to throw the ball if he did catch it (which I told him all of which would probably happen but it was no big deal). I didn't get to see much of his game, but he got walked twice and stole 2nd base!  He was much happier and I think relieved to be done with his 1st game, which his team won. I hope he gains some confidence and has more fun at his next game! What a coincidence he's on the Twins team - he is a twin, he was born in Minneapolis, and I even worked for the Twins (very briefly)!

Start of the parade - it was about 45 degrees and Alex was in shorts!
