60!!

We were in Omaha, Nebraska last weekend to celebrate my mom's 6oth birthday. Happy Birthday Mom!!

It was a very short trip out there and back, but the kids had a great time. We went swimming and mini golfing, and had some great food and cupcakes. As we were leaving on Sunday Alex very seriously asked me, "Mom, can we bring Grandma home with us?"  Aww...Very sweet stuff!

Never Ending Winter

We woke up to more snow on Wednesday morning, and after having a 50 degree day on Monday I was not thrilled with the idea of more snow. The forecasts for Wednesday were all over the place, with snow accumulation expected anywhere from 4 to over 10 inches!  I think we probably ended up with around 5 or 6 inches, but as you can see it was very heavy snow with maybe some ice in there too. School was canceled due to power outages...I was ready to cry. Its not that I don't like my kids, and I love having a day off to do nothing, but it is getting old. Every week except one this year I've either had a kid home sick or a snow day, and some weeks, like this one, both! Please go away winter and bring me some warm weather and sunshine!!

Ravellenics

The weather has been cold and snowy, and Andy gave me his cold (thanks so much), so I've been indoors for way too much this winter. I've been knitting (and painting our walls and ceilings) like crazy.  Ravelry had a competition for the duration of the Olympics called Ravellenics, where you can enter different events and win medals. I have a cousin who is having a baby girl later this year, so I decided to try and make some baby things: booties, a hat & socks. Knitting for babies is so much fun and it is so quick too! I love these baby booties, although I didn't use a traditional baby color. This pattern called for a DK yarn and this was the only DK I had at home.

I also made this shawl - one of my favorites!

Alex requested a Pokemon ball, so I crocheted up a few of these too!

Crocheted Pokemon Ball
I'm so ready for some warmer weather! Unfortunately, if the forecast is correct, I will have a few more weeks of knitting and painting.

More Snow

It snowed most of the day today, although I don't think we got more than 2 or 3 inches. The kids went outside to play, but I chose to stay inside. I actually took most of the pictures through our (not very clean) windows, although I did open the door once. I'm really sick of the snow and cold this year, so I avoid going outside as much as possible.  We had some gigantic icicles outside our kitchen window that the kids had been eyeing, so they were thrilled it was warm enough to finally get outside and get them!

Snow!!

We have been getting lots of snow here in the Chicago area, with more expected(could be 4-8 more inches) in the next couple days. I ventured out for just a little while Saturday morning, to take a few pictures and help shovel the driveway. Oh, I really don't like having such a long driveway in the winter. It snowed several more inches in the afternoon on Saturday - so I shoveled the driveway again! I don't think we'll see the ground for a very long time.

Music Concert

The 3rd grade had a music concert last night. Since the kids were dressed up I thought I'd get a few nice pictures. Yeah right. My kids NEVER cooperate with pictures. Either they mess around or they refuse to smile.

At the concert the kids showed us what they are learning in music, and they each played us a song they learned on the xylophone.

Busy week for Faye

Faye has had a very busy week. She was in the school spelling bee and had her very first piano recital! I'm very proud of all her hard work. Students had the option to try out for the spelling bee, and of course she wanted to try! They gave the students a quiz of 50 words and picked the top 13 students for the spelling bee. Faye was one of two 3rd graders who made it!

Faye did very well in the spelling bee, making it to round 9 I believe. She won't move on, only the top two move on to the next round, and she finished 4th.  She correctly spelled bumpy, yonder, gangster, kinsman, travesty, porosity, annihilation, & roustabout. She missed the word 'aphasia'. It was a word from the 9th grade list, and we never made it that far studying. If she had studied it I have no doubt she would have correctly spelled it. We went over the 8th grade words the night before the spelling bee, and she learned porosity and annihilation. She has a brilliant little mind and never forgets anything! I had to look up how to pronounce some of the words on her list - there were some difficult words!

Ready for her recital
Faye started taking piano lessons in October from Mary Novak. She is the sweetest teacher and I am so glad we found her. Faye loves playing the piano, and comes downstairs first thing every morning and plays a song or two in her pajamas.

Practice before the recital
The recital was at Praire State College. She was able to play on a Steinway piano, which she was very excited about! She played Deck the Halls, and Rondino.
